Religious Groups of Afghanistan
About ninety-nine percent of the populations in Afghanistan are Muslims. There are two main large groups or sects of Muslims. One is the Sunnites which make up about eighty-four percent of Muslims and the other sect are the Shiites which make up about fifteen percent of Muslims. There some smaller sects like that only make up about two or three percent of Muslim religion. These different types of sects or people are all due to religion.
Social Groups of Afghanistan
One group in Afghanistan are the Pashtun. They are the group of people with the most population and are one of the few groups who have access to Jesus and his films. Since they have the Jesus Film they get to learn and know of jesus teachings and ministries. The Jesus film is a film that is based according to the gospel of Luke and shows the life of jesus and his been translated into over 1,160 langauges. They do not have a copy of the bible translated into their language and more than sixty percent of their group has not heard of the gospel. Tajiks, the second largest people group in Afghanistan, also have access to the jesus film and part of the new testament translated into their language. Less than one percent of their over four million followers do follow Jesus.
Powerful Group of Afghanistan
Two thirds of the country of Afghanistan, including the capital, Kabul, is ruled by a the Taliban. The Taliban, or "students," developed their extremist interpretation of Islam in the refugee camps of Pakistan during war against the Soviet occupation. In the political, social and economic chaos after the Soviet withdrawal and then loss of American aid, the Taliban fought against other groups for control of the country. After the takeover of the capital, the streets of Kabul were full of young bearded men in black turbans, high on the Qur'an and battle. People from the Taliban raced all around the city, whipping anyone who they believed was being anti-Muslim.
